In our Pamoja! group coaching Facebook group we been having an interesting discussion about goals and actually reaching them. For the most part we’re talking about healthy lifestyle changes but it could easily apply to any goals you have. If you are anything like us, you’ve probably found that having a big idea is not always enough to make it actually happen. You want to change how you eat. You know you need to because of your health. You want to be at your best and be able to do all the things you want to do in your life. And then things happen. You’re stressed out. You’re busy and you don’t have time. Your life situation changes, you get a divorce, you’re traveling, you have a job change or you’re unemployed and your best intentions are pushed to the wayside. You’re back to the same old bad habits.
Does any of this sound familiar to you? I bet it does. So in Pamoja! we’re talking about how we can do things differently.
I’m always reading and researching for new ideas that can help you create the healthy and amazing life you desire and deserve to have. One of the most interesting questions that I found is:
Who do I need to BE to reach my goals? Who do I need to be?!
I’ve never though of it that way before. Not what do I need to do (yet) but WHO do I need to BE?
So, I have a really big goal. I really can’t believe it but I’m turning 60 this summer!!!! My goal is to go into my 60s and onward being vital and energetic and healthy. I want to be able to hike these hilly roads without problem. To ride my bike without feeling like I need to collapse afterwards. I want to age with style. I want to be able to say “I’m not just getting older I’m getting better!”
Fortunately I have longevity on both sides. My paternal grandmother lived into her 90s. My maternal grandmother was 108 when she passed! She was always pretty healthy but when she was in her late 60s maybe early 70s she had a health scare. She decided then that she was going to make a serious change. She started eating much better. She was always a walker and she started doing more jogging. In fact she even did a marathon in her 90s. She was always a model for me of aging with grace and with power and independence.
I just recently had a scare myself. I tripped and fell walking on these rocky Tanzanian roads. Stumbled on a stone sticking out and fell down. I didn’t break anything, but I definitely bruised and banged up my arms. It’s been a week since it happened and I’m doing much better. Still a little sore but getting better every day.
It put an exclamation point on the fact that I need to really make sure that I have the energy and strength to travel these roads and enjoy the outdoors! I need to maintain myself in the optimal way, especially now that I am heading into my 60s. So, as I said, my goal is to be an energetic and vital woman for as long as I can, well into my senior years.
Back to the big question: who do I need to be in order to make that happen? Not what do I need to do, but who do I need to be? What type of person do I need to be? What type of beliefs do I need to have? What types of commitments do I need to make?
I need to be a person who puts a high priority on staying active over being couch potato and a geek. I need to be a person who can stay balanced and not just focus on business or getting things done! Who won’t just keep pushing and pushing myself when I see something that needs to be done, but pays attention when my body says REST! I need to be a person who really hears and listens to the messages that my body is sending me. I need to be a person who is interested in the world around me, who is interested in the people around me. Who’s curious and wants to be involved and has a vision for the future. Who has a purpose for the future and a reason to stay vital and active and healthy. That’s who I need to be.
What about you?
What are your goals? What are your top two or three goals for your life to the next 6 to 12 months? What do you want to do? What you want to achieve? Where you want to go?
Who do YOU need to be in order to reach those goals? What type of person? What type of commitments do you need to have? What type of beliefs do you need to have?
This just one part of what we been talking about in Pamoja! but it was such an interesting question that I thought that I would share it with you.
What do you think? Is this an interesting question? I’d love to hear your reflections and your ideas about who you need to be to reach your goals. Leave a comment below!! 🙂
