Today I’m talking about Sankofa and what it has to do with health and healing. Living here in Tanzania I have seen many things that are what I like to call the Roots of Wellness, reminding us that what’s modern, what’s new is not necessarily better and that the ways that our people, our ancestors have lived for generations for thousands of years are actually the roots of wellness.
Sankofa is all about reaching back to the past to remember and reclaim what we have left behind to help us as we go forward. I believe this is a vital part of our wellness journey. We have forgotten the true Roots of Wellness and have been convinced that what is “modern” is better. In this video, Part 1 of my Roots of Wellness Series, I focus on what our ancestors have to teach us about diet. In future videos I will talk about more of them.
There are many many delicious plant-based recipes here in East Africa and across the continent that have been a staple of the diets for many, many years. Here are some of them. Go to this page for more.
Now I’d love to hear from you. What do you think we can learn from our ancestors? What questions do you have? What plant-based recipes from the continent of Africa do you know? Leave a comment below.
