Worried About Food Safety? – Grow Your Own Food

Nothing tastes as good as fresh picked

Food safety is a real concern. The news is full of stories about Monsanto and the growing incident of GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms in our food. This is just one more thing added to the dangers of pesticides, unsanitary food handling, and the environmental impact of transporting food around the world.

As a vegan, organic produce makes up the bulk of what I eat. It is clear that the food industry has little concern about our health and safety. It is getting harder and harder to find affordable safe, nutritious food in stores.

So what can we do? How can we protect ourselves?

Grow our own food. Plant in containers on a deck, patio, or sunny window if your space is limited. Plant in rows if you have plenty of room. Include vegetables in and amongst your flowers or other landscaping. Find a community garden and get involved.

I use the Square Foot method of gardening. Here is my garden and the variety I have in 6, 4 foot x 6 foot raised beds.

Here is the link to Ron Finley’s TED talks I mention in the video.

A garden has many benefits. It can help you follow a good number of Dr. Opare’s rules from his Rule Book And User Guide For Healthy Living.

It is great exercise.Digging, bending, weeding can all help you get and keep your body moving.

It gets you out in the sunshine. Spend a bit of time each day outdoors to get your vitamin D and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Take a deep breath. Enjoy the fresh air.

Supply your family with healthy and great tasting food. Food picked and eaten the same day is healthier and tastes much better than food that has been picked before it is ripe and spent days or weeks in shipping.

Involve your children. Gardening together is a great way to get them interested in eating healthy, it is a fabulous learning experience and it gives you quality time together.

Share with friends. You will likely have an abundance of some produce. This gift will be appreciated by those who receive it.

Whatever you do – Plant something somewhere.

Tell us about what you’re growing. Leave a comment or post a video response on our youtube channel.
